Dress in Blue on Sunday March 15 for Colon Cancer Awareness Month

 
Because many Arborlawn families have been touched by colon cancer, Arborlawn is joining the national Colon Cancer Alliance’s Dress in Blue Day movement by having our church's second annual Dress in Blue Sunday on March 15. March is national Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and we invite you to participate in this awareness effort.
 

Please plan to wear something blue to church on March 15 to show your support for Colon Cancer Research and patient care initiatives. Colon Cancer awareness literature, giveaways, and other health related materials will be available at the Welcome Kiosks between services. Donations will be received for the CCA Blue Note Fund which supports people who do not have the financial resources to receive the care they need once they have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. By supporting national Dress in Blue Day and the CCA’s screening, research, and patient support initiatives, we can knock colon cancer out of being one of the top three cancer killers for good.
 
Many Arborlawn friends and others will also be gathering on Thursday, March 19 at Blue Mesa (University Park Village) from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for a Dress in Blue event, so feel free to join in the fellowship.

“Family Harmony: Anger in the Family” Seminar Sunday, March 1

 
We invite everyone to attend a special seminar on Sunday, March 1 presented by Arborlawn member Helen Williamson Elliott. The seminar, entitled “Family Harmony: Anger in the Family” will be at 6:00 p.m. in Room 271.
 
This special free presentation will be an overview of different things a family can do to help build a stronger bond and recognize ways family members may be inadvertently hurting others. There are patterns of behaving that we learn in our families of origin, but with some work, we can rewrite the patterns with a few behavioral tools which will be introduced in the presentation.  
 
Helen Williamson Elliott, M.S. LPC-Intern holds a masters degree in counseling, is a former upper elementary school teacher and the mother of three adult children in their twenties. She has been counseling for five years and now works with juveniles on probation and counsels individuals, couples, and families in Cleburne and Southlake. She especially enjoys working with teens and children. Given Mrs. Elliott has a long athletic history, she is a strong proponent of healthy choices for the body, and believes the mind, body, and spirit work together. She believes that faith plays a very important part in emotional healing.
 
Mrs. Elliott has been a member of Arborlawn UMC since the merger (and 2 years prior at Westcliff UMC) and has been involved in many activities such as mission trips to McCurdy School in New Mexico and UMCOR, has helped with snack sacks and habitat for humanity, has participated in numerous women’s bible studies, and worked with the praise band for three years. She regularly attends the Beyond 90 Days Sunday School class and the 11:11 Service.

Low Stress Joining Sunday March 29

 
We know that being in front of crowds is not everyone’s forte. The distance from the pew to the front of the Sanctuary or Worship Center can seem like miles. So, we are excited to announce that Sunday, March 29 will be Low Stress Joining Sunday. On this Sunday we invite those who have been thinking about joining the church to come down at the end of the services and join with others who have also been considering this important decision. This is a Sunday to celebrate new beginnings and to find community. We hope you will consider being a part of this special day. Arborlawn Children Collecting for Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 1; WestAid Seeking Food Donations

 
Kids from Arborlawn’s Children’s Ministries will be collecting money once again this year for Souper Bowl of Caring. Look for them in the Lower Commons on Sunday, February 1 after each service. They will have collection soup pots, and donated funds go directly to the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
 

Each year on Super Bowl Sunday many churches collect money to help local food banks. Last year Arborlawn Kids collected $460. Thank you so much for your support of this worthy cause!
 
Also, our friends at WestAid are having a Souper Bowl of Caring drive this year. If you are interested in donating, they are looking for macaroni and cheese, cornbread mix, canned pasta, canned pork and beans, and dried ramen soups. Please bring your WestAid donations to Room 230 (adjacent to the kitchen).

One of the most important ministries of Arborlawn United Methodist Church takes place as people first step foot into the doors of our church. The welcoming faces, caring spirits, and hospitable attitudes set the tone for the experience people have at Arborlawn. We would like to thank all those who serve as Greeters as well as invite others who would like to be involved in this ministry.
 

Greeter Training and Appreciation is Sunday, December 7 at 12:15 p.m. in the Children’s Gathering Area (Room 146 on the Sanctuary Level; underneath and behind the main staircase). During this time we will celebrate the ministry we share and offer a brief training and refresher tips for everyone who is a part of this team. If you have not RSVP’d, we have ordered extra food so you are still welcome to join us if you’re interested in being a greeter. Childcare available.

“Seasons of Life” Sermon Series Week 4: Winter: Seeing Your Life’s Investments

 
The sermon series “Seasons of Life” concludes November 2 as we consider Winter. For a lot of people, there is a fear of the winter season; yet it is a season we all want to experience. It is an opportunity to see your life's investments. Winter is a gift to be received and shared. People in this season are a gift to be shared and a blessing to our community. Our culture places a high value on people with knowledge and a low value on people with wisdom. We recognize that wisdom is a gift to be shared for future generations.
 

Each season of life presents its own set of unique challenges and opportunities. As a church, we are not called to become isolated into sub-groups where we only see and hear from those in the same season we are in. Instead, we are placed together in community to learn from, encourage, and support one another through the various challenges and opportunities.
 
Our goal in this series is to affirm that no matter what season of life you are in, God is still at work breathing life into you.

This is when we begin seriously looking at what kind of legacy or influence we will leave behind. We're obsessed by what happens on the outside, but we should be invested now in what God is doing on the inside. No matter what season you are in, life is at work in you.

Summer is marked by a time of maturing. Maturing and growing means we're moving into and accepting our limitations. The relationships we develop, the priorities we set, and the values by which we live will ultimately determine whether we survive this season with our faithfulness to God and the goals we have set intact.

One of the Boy Scout troops that meets at Arborlawn (Troop 50) is holding its annual chili supper fundraiser on Tuesday, November 4 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Tickets are $4 per person or three for $10 and will be sold on Sunday, November 2 in the Lower Commons.

“Seasons of Life” Sermon Series Starts Sunday, October 12

 
Join us on Sunday, October 12 as we begin a new sermon series called “Seasons of Life.”
 
We start with Spring, which is marked by ambition, excitement, passion, and possibility. The most important lesson for people in the Spring of life is for them to learn to hear the voice of God. Our hope should be that we want them to become the people God wants them to be, not the people we want them to be.
 

Each season of life presents its own set of unique challenges and opportunities. “Woman to Woman”: Seminar at Arborlawn About Women’s Cancers on Tuesday, October 7

 
Arborlawn is hosting an informative  event called “Woman to Woman: Doctors Discuss Women's Cancers” on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Worship Center. Four female oncologists will be here to discuss women's cancer issues with interested ladies and their loved ones. Hear the latest about these health topics from Cristi Aitelli,  D.O., Anita Chow, M.D., Noelle Cloven, M.D., and Kathleen Shide, M.D.
 

Refreshments will be served, door prizes will be awarded, and time for questions and answers with all of the doctors will be provided. Please join us for this informative and timely seminar.

Arborlawn Welcomes Rev. Bayard Pratt

 
Bishop Mike Lowry and the Central Texas Conference announce the appointment of Rev. Bayard Pratt as Associate Minister to Arborlawn. Rev Pratt started at Arborlawn this past Wednesday, October 1. He has a shared history and deep connections with our congregation.
 

Born in Ponca City Oklahoma, Bayard moved to Fort Worth when he was very young and attended schools in the Fort Worth ISD. He also grew up in the Westcliff United Methodist Church. He attended Texas Christian University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then began seminary at Perkins School of Theology on the SMU campus where he completed his Masters in Theology degree. Prior to his appointment to Arborlawn, Bayard served churches in Fort Worth, Georgetown, Arlington, and Corsicana. While he was an Associate Minister at First UMC Fort Worth, he served on the founding board of Tarrant County’s Habitat for Humanity.
 
Presently Bayard serves as the past chair of the board of Texas Health Resources Harris HEB and chair of the Community Resource committee Texas Health Resources Harris HEB. Other community service includes serving on the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Mental Health Tarrant County and Leadership Fort Worth.
 
Bayard is an ordained Elder in Full Connection with the Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.
 
Bayard and his wife, Louann Teel-Pratt, have been married for 34 years. They have two children: Hannah and Adam, who is married to Emily. We look forward to the addition of Rev. Pratt to our ministry team. Welcome home Bayard and Louann!

Arborlawn is hosting an informative  event called “Woman to Woman: Doctors Discuss Women's Cancers” on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Worship Center. Three female oncologists from Texas Oncology will be here to discuss women's cancer issues with interested ladies and their loved ones.
 

Dr Katie Shide: “Some 39,000 women in the U.S. will die from breast cancer in 2014. As frightening as that number is, death rates have actually been in a decline since the early 1990s. There are other reassuring numbers. Eight out of ten lumps found in the breast are benign. There are currently more than 2.5 million women who are survivors in the United States today. Earlier diagnosis combined with better treatments have improved survival of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Many questions still remain. Such as, ‘Is there a link between breast pain and breast cancer?’ and ‘What if my daughter has breast cancer; does my risk go up?’ Learn more and be able to ask four breast cancer specialists your questions.” Katie Shide, M.D. is a Radiation Oncologist and will be on the panel of doctors speaking at the “Woman to Woman” seminar at Arborlawn on October 7.

Dr. Anita Chow: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis among women in the United States. By being better informed about the disease and more aware of the symptoms, we can achieve better treatment outcome. Furthermore, understanding of the risk factors associated with the disease, such as family history, can help prevention.” Anita Chow, M.D. is a Breast Surgical Oncologist and will be on the panel of doctors speaking at the “Woman to Woman” seminar at Arborlawn on October 7.

One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Virtually every woman knows someone who has fought the battle against breast cancer. Family history and lifestyle choices play a role in every woman’s breast cancer risk. Do you know your personal risk of developing breast cancer? Are you aware of ways you could decrease your risk? Cristi Aitelli is a board certified medical oncologist in southwest Fort Worth. She specializes in breast cancer, breast cancer awareness, education, and risk reduction. Dr. Aitelli will be on the panel of doctors speaking at the “Woman to Woman” seminar at Arborlawn on October 7.

Arborlawn is hosting an informative  event called “Woman to Woman: Doctors Discuss Women’s Cancers” on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Worship Center. Three female oncologists from Texas Oncology will be here to discuss women’s cancer issues with interested ladies and their loved ones.
 

Every seven minutes, a woman in America is diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer. Gynecologic cancers include cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial/uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer. There are specific steps that every woman can take to decrease the risk and possibly prevent these cancers. Noelle Gillette Cloven is a board certified gynecologic oncologist with Texas Oncology, specializing in the prevention and management gynecologic cancers. Dr. Gillette will be on the panel of doctors speaking at the “Woman to Woman” seminar at Arborlawn on October 7.
