Kids Hope training on August 30

 
School will be starting soon, and we want to be ready to help the kids at J. T. Stevens Elementary again. We do this best by having Kids Hope mentors trained and ready to help. We will have a training for new mentors on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room  260.
 
If you are available one hour a week to help just one child, please contact Shirley Watkins or Laurie Ryan for more information. Join us in this rewarding ministry and be the difference in a child's life.

Kids Hope back-to-school event Saturday week (August 11)

 
Summer has flown by, August is here, and school's on the horizon. Our "Back to School Shop & Party" event for the kids of J. T. Stevens Elementary (through our Kids Hope USA partnership) is coming up Saturday week at 10 a.m. in the Family Life Center.
 

We appreciate those who have been able to help us pay for some of the school supplies and uniforms we plan to hand out to the kids. We're pleased, certainly. But we're never surprised by the extent to which the hearts of Arborlawn family will stretch, grow, and give back. Read more about the event.

A number of Arborlawn members are currently working through the Kids Hope USA program serving as mentors to students at J.T. Stevens Elementary School. As the start of a new school year draws closer, Arborlawn is hosting a “Back to School Shop & Party” for the kids of J.T. Stevens on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to Noon in our Family Life Center.
 

In working with the kids and the school administration, the goal is to provide school uniforms and some school supplies for students as they begin a new school year. Through other generous donations, we’re also providing backpacks and serving a breakfast for the kids and their families. Shirley Watkins, Laurie Ryan, Ty Hodges and a host of other volunteers and mentors are helping make this possible.
 
If you would like to help, please consider volunteering your time on Aug. 11 to help distribute the items or make a contribution of $20 per child for as many kids as you wish to help. Please make checks payable to Arborlawn UMC, and please write “Kids Hope Back-to-School 2012” in the memo line. Thanks for your generosity.

Our partnership with J. T. Stevens Elementary (through Kids Hope USA) has produced (and is producing) many fantastic relationships between the kids and their mentors.
 
School is coming up soon, and Arborlawn is hosting the “Back to School Shop & Party” for the kids of Stevens on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to Noon in our Family Life Center. At the party, we’ll be providing the students with school supplies and uniforms. We appreciate if you can help us financially with this project.

Firecracker Mission Moment for this Sunday, July 8: Kids Hope USA

 
Arborlawn members Shirley Watkins and Laurie Ryan are the featured speakers for this Sunday's Firecracker Mission Moment. Everyone's invited to hear them at 9:50 a.m. in Room 160 this Sunday, July 8. Kids Hope USA is a national volunteer mentoring program that benefits school children. Arborlawn volunteers work with kids from Fort Worth's J. T. Stevens Elementary.
 

The remaining lineup of July's Firecracker Mission Moment speakers includes: David Nance and others from NICA (Northside Inter-Community Agency) on July 15; Rev. Dawn Phillips from the Central Texas Conference's Center for Mission Support on July 22; and William Pherigo from WestAid on July 29.

Arborlawn's Kids Hope USA partnership with J. T. Stevens Elementary far exceeded all expectations this past spring. We've been warmly welcomed into the rich learning environment at Stevens where we've even been given our own mentoring room. Each week as mentors met with their Kids Hope students, relationships were built, trust was developed, and hearts were opened.
 

As the next step in this relationship, plans have been made for an event called "Back to School Shop & Party" to benefit all students at the school. On Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to Noon, we are inviting all J. T. Stevens families to join us in our Family Life Center where the children will receive new backpacks, school supplies, and new school uniforms. Games and crafts will also be provided.
 
This event will provide a unique opportunity for us to welcome these families to our church and let them experience God's people in action. We are asking the congregation to help us fund this event by making donations for the purchase of uniforms. Please consider offering hope to these precious children. If you feel led to assist us, please make checks payable to Arborlawn and marked for Kids Hope School Shop.
 
Also, please consider coming to help on Aug. 11. You'll have a chance to meet God's precious ones from Stevens. We'll be asking for more mentors in the autumn. One child might just touch your heart and compel you to become a Kids Hope Mentor.

Kids Hope launches at J. T. Stevens; mentors to be commissioned on Sunday, April 15

 
Arborlawn’s Kids Hope USA program launched this week at J. T. Stevens Elementary with 25 students, 26 mentors, and 12 prayer partners. The principal (Mrs. Lange) and staff at Stevens have worked tirelessly to identify students and obtain parental consent; now it’s here. The children are so excited to have mentors!
 
All 26 mentors completed the three-hour training, background checks, and reference checks. Last Tuesday, Apr. 10, students, mentors, and prayer partners met at the school, and mentoring began.
   
On Sunday, Apr. 15, the mentors will be commissioned during the 11 a.m. worship service. Don’t miss this exciting time in our church family. Our mentors are making such a great impact in our community with precious children.
 

If you weren’t able to join us this spring, we hope you will consider signing up for the 2012-2013 school year. We’ll have more training opportunities in August.

The respected child mentoring program - Kids Hope USA - is coming to Arborlawn. Arborlawn implementing Kids Hope USA ministry

 
Kids Hope USA is a program through which at-risk children are mentored one-on-one by caring adults. The relationships come about through church-school partnerships, and Arborlawn is the exact type of church where Kids Hope flourishes. The ministry is about to begin here.
 

Kids Hope mentors spend just one hour per week with a child at school. Activities during that hour include reading, talking, playing, or just listening. By helping the children feel loved and valued, the mentors help the kids to learn, grow, and succeed.
