Arborlawn, Trinity Habitat, and the Jimmy Carter Build This October

 
From Patricia Johnson: This year we are partnering with other United Methodist churches to build a home during the Jimmy Carter Build. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood will be on site during the week of October 5-11, 2014.
 

We will be allotted spaces during that week based on the amount of money we raise. Other build times will also be available before and after. Most are on weekends from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Background checks will be required for those building during the week of October 5-11. Site hosts and Cornerstone Volunteers do not count toward our allotted spaces.
 
We have requested to build the home for the First UMC Hurst minister that will be built during that week. We will keep you updated on this.
 
Donations to this year’s Habitat home should be made to Arborlawn UMC with a note for Habitat. All money is due by Friday, August 1. If you are interested in participating, please contact Patricia Johnson.

Trinity Habitat for Humanity to Host Carter Work Project This Fall

 
Arborlawn’s friends at Trinity Habitat for Humanity are participating in the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project October 5-11, 2014. The Fort Worth part of this Metroplex-wide event will see the construction of 15 new homes in the Central Meadowbrook neighborhood and the painting of 50 existing homes throughout Fort Worth in partnership with the City of Fort Worth’s “Cowtown Brush Up” Program.
 

Those who are interested in this project will have the opportunity to discuss it with Kapreta Johnson of Trinity Habitat for Humanity in the Lower Commons between worship services on Sunday, May 11. She will be at a table that day answering questions with Arborlawn Habitat contacts Roy Rambo and Patricia Johnson.
 
Jimmy Carter became involved with Habitat for Humanity in 1984 when, as an experienced carpenter, he helped renovate a six-story New York City apartment building. That initial project was the seed for what would become a long-lasting partnership. Every year for three decades, Jimmy and Rosalynn have spent a week building homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Carters’ yearly commitment to Habitat – called the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project – brings a spotlight to the local host community and an enthusiasm for Habitat for Humanity’s work across the globe. The 31st annual Carter Work Project features work in communities in and around Fort Worth and Dallas.
 
Trinity Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope by offering a variety of innovative housing solutions. Trinity Habitat builds new homes, externally repairs existing homes, and offers homeownership education classes and counseling services in partnership with qualified hardworking families in Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, and Wise Counties. These varied solutions enable Trinity Habitat to effectively respond to changing housing realities in our service area, to adapt to the unique needs of specific families and neighborhoods, and to help families thrive and neighborhoods flourish.

Habitat project: house almost together with help from volunteers

 
The Habitat home for the Obegi/Aganyo family in Meadowbrook is almost completed (the portions that volunteers do, anyway). Arborlawn volunteers were joined recently by workers from Heritage Church of Christ and First United Methodist from the nearby build site. Thanks to Laurie Ryan and family, Leta Davis, and the Connolly family for providing lunches last weekend.
 
A big thanks goes out to those who stepped forwarded after we asked and will be working with us on Friday, October 25. We still need volunteers for Saturday, November 2, which is the last workday until landscape day (a date for which has yet to be determined). No carpentry skills are necessary; all we ask is a desire to help.

The Habitat home for the Obegi/Aganyo family in Meadowbrook is still coming together. If you can help us with the project, we need volunteers for Saturday, October 19, Friday, October 25, and Saturday, November 2. No carpentry skills are necessary; all we ask is a desire to help.
 
Please note Saturday, October 25 is especially light right now on signups, and we might not be able to work that day if we don't get more volunteers.

Habitat build off to a great start; join the fun on upcoming Fridays and Saturdays

 
We are off to great start with the Habitat for Humanity build in partnership with the Obegi/Aganyo family. A big thanks goes to all of the volunteers (builders and those who brought lunch and snacks) so far. The volunteers got rained out early on Saturday, September 28 but were still able to complete the framing of the walls.
 

Special hats off and raised hammers to Kris Hamilton, Tom Wilson, Larry Dillon, and Paul Wright who helped on the Fellowship house (two lots down from the Obegi/Aganyo home) because that project was short-handed. Everyone was fed wonderful lunches by the Open Door and Ben Feemster Sunday School classes.
 
We still have plenty of openings on all Fridays and Saturdays. Come out and join the fun. No skills are required; just a desire to help.

Habitat build begins next week; we still need volunteers for four specific days

 
We're very grateful to all who have agreed to help us build the Habitat home alongside the Obegi/Aganyo family starting Friday, September 27. Some days are still a little light on help, so if you or your group or class could volunteer on October 4 (Friday), October 12 (Saturday), October 19 (Saturday), or October 25 (Friday) it would really help us out.
 

Also, plenty of people and groups have answered the call to provide lunches for the volunteers throughout the process. If you have any questions about meals for the project, contact Lyn Neal.

Habitat: build starts September 27; signup to help build or bring food; first two days of build are especially critical - please help us represent Arborlawn!

 
Have your hammers ready? It's time to sign up and help build the seventh Arborlawn home with Trinity Habitat. Check your calendars and come see us in the Lower Commons to sign up. We have 10 days of work ahead of us and need 24 volunteers each day. There will be one half-day of landscaping that requires 20 volunteers.
 
We have only filled one day with the required number of 24 volunteers. The first two days, Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28, are especially critical. The work done on those two days set the tone and timeline for the rest of the build. We want to send a strong message to Habitat and to the family that we are 100 percent committed to building this home. Bring your friends, family and co-workers! We need you even if for half a day.

3. Hours of work are 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please arrive at 7:30 a.m. if you can.
 
4. We are scheduled to work Fridays and Saturdays beginning September 27 and through November 2. We will not work October 26 or November 1.
 
5. Details on what to wear, what to do if the weather is bad, map to the location, etc. will be available prior to the start date.

Arborlawn & Habitat: build starts Friday, September 27 for Obegi/Aganyo family

 
Arborlawn is partnering this fall with Trinity Habitat for Humanity and the Obegi/Aganyo family to construct a new home for the family.
 
Kennedy Obegi & Teresa Aganyo, and their daughter Felistas and son Joshua, look forward to meeting the Arborlawn volunteers who will be helping with this project. Mr. Obegi said, "We are very excited to finally have a home to call our own! Our children can have their own bedrooms, and we will no longer have to worry about space for visitors. We will also be responsible by maintaining our home instead of waiting on a landlord to make repairs. We have enjoyed earning sweat equity hours while working on construction sites. We have made new friends and helped many families along the way."

Habitat project: 60 percent to goal on commitments

 
Arborlawn has had a great relationship with Trinity Habitat for Humanity in the past few years. Volunteers from our church have worked many hours with the organization to help deserving home owners realize the dream of seeing a house arise from the ground up… and become a home.
 
The past few months we've been gathering financial commitments regarding our Habitat build project scheduled to start in September. So far we're about 60 percent complete on our path to the financial goal. The model home in the Lower Commons now contains 200 little wooden "bricks" that represent financial commitments. Part of these bricks represent donations given in memory of little Anderson Maxwell Graham.
 

Financial commitments to this project must be in place before Memorial Day. Stop by the model home this Sunday, and speak with Patricia Johnson and Roy Rambo. They will be happy to help you with any questions you have about our involvement with and the value of Habitat for Humanity.
