Warmed Heart Class beginning study of Lee Strobel book April 15

Warmed Heart Sunday School class begins the Lee Strobel series “The Case for Faith” this Sunday, Apr. 15. The class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 170 off the Lower Commons on the west side of the building. Deb and Andy Sewell are leading the 6-8 week investigation of some of the toughest objections to Christianity.
    
Issues addressed by the study include: Dealing with Doubts; Evil and Suffering Exist, Therefore a Loving God Cannot; Why is Jesus the Only Way to God?; God Isn’t Worthy of Belief If He Lets Innocent Children Die; and Evolution Explains Life, Therefore God is Not Needed by Intelligent Minds.
 

Because this study incorporates a weekly DVD series, as well as class discussion, the class begins promptly at 9:50 a.m. Seating is limited, so please come early.

The latest Bible studies from Women’s Ministries at Arborlawn begin Wednesday, Apr. 18.
 
“James: Mercy Triumphs” by Beth Moore runs through June 6. Join us from 9:45-11:45 a.m. in Room 225.
 

James, Jesus’ own brother, started as a skeptic. See in this study how one glimpse of the Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Using Beth Moore’s newest study and DVD-based lessons, we explore the spiritual journey of James. Contact Shirley Watkins to reserve your workbook for this study.

"Walk as Jesus Walked" by Ray Vander Laan is also starting Apr. 18 (9:30-11:30 a.m. in Room 222) and runs through May 16. This is a DVD-based study through which we will "learn how the culture and politics of the first century influenced the imagery and stories of the Bible, and see the text through the eyes of God’s chosen people, the Jews." (Zondervan)

Connections Class starts new study on Methodism

 
Connections Class has started a new book looking at the fundamentals of the Methodist faith. The book is called “On the Threshold of Grace” by Donald Haynes. This book is helping the class understand its Wesleyan heritage, including our unique history and the theology that makes us who we are today.
 

The first two lessons have provided great background and insight into who we are as the church today and what we can take and use from Wesley’s early ideas about God and the church. Books are available for $13 through class teacher Todd Evers.
 
Join us in Room 224 at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays as we learn and discover the history and theology of our faith together!

Pray in Faith study ongoing now through November 20

Arborlawn's Prayer Ministry is conducting the study “Pray in Faith” Sunday evenings from 4-5:30 p.m. in Room 222. Led by Bonny Jenista, the series is based on the book by T.W. Hunt and Claude King and is designed to help grow and strengthen our individual and corporate prayer life.
 

The series explores the essential elements of building and maintaining a genuine and meaningful prayer life. “Pray in Faith” is more than information about prayer. It’s about helping us become people immersed in prayer as we seek to hear the cries of our neighbor and listen for the voice of God. Our prayer is that Arborlawn will become a House of Prayer.

New Wednesday morning WMAA Bible study starts Oct. 26

Women's Ministry at Arborlawn will begin a new Wednesday morning Bible Study - One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer - on Oct. 26. This is a DVD-based study with daily homework which will run for six weeks.
 
The Going Beyond web site says about the study: "Join Priscilla on an exploration of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness in One In A Million as she encourages participants to fully engage in the abundant life God has waiting for those who will allow Him to take the lead in daily living. One In A Million is an opportunity for you to experience your deliverance from strongholds, to conquer your wilderness living, and to claim your God-given inheritance."

Place to Belong begins Dunnam study Oct. 13

Place to Belong, a Bible study for single women or women worshipping alone, begins a new study on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in Room 222. The group will be studying Going on to Salvation - A Study of Wesleyan Beliefs (Revised Edition) by Maxie Dunnam. This is a 10-week guide "for the Christian pilgrimage of 'faith working through love,' as envisioned by John Wesley and practiced by the people called Methodist."
 


This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the biblical and Wesleyan doctrine of salvation. The study will be enriched by supplemental online sermons by John Wesley. In addition, Ben Disney, Beth Evers, Bryan Bellamy, and Judy Williamson will join us for some of the sessions to expound upon the United Methodist theology we'll be discussing.
 
Books may be purchased at Cokesbury or online for approximately $9. The study will culminate on Dec. 22 with a Christmas celebration. The Journey studying gray matter

Come join The Journey! The class is a progressive, multigenerational group of disciples seeking to strengthen faith in God and Christ through the exploration of diverse points of view.
   
Class lessons are discussion-oriented, and expression of alternative perspectives through respectful listening and open minds is encouraged. We believe that by questioning and challenging, we can better discern God’s truth. We also believe that our faith in Jesus should manifest itself in action.
   
We’re currently studying Adam Hamilton’s DVD series Seeing Gray: Where Faith & Politics Meet – based on his bestseller Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White. This series is a video-based study that explores the role of faith in public life. Its purpose is to engage thoughtful Christians in dialogue and self-examination so that we may model a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Participants are encouraged to listen, learn, and see truth as multi-sided; to make their voices heard; and to love those with whom they disagree.
 
The sessions include: Where Faith and Politics Meet; Christ, Christians, and the Culture Wars; How Should We Live? The Ethics of Jesus; Spiritual Maturity and Seeing Gray; and What Would Jesus Say to America?

Connections Class begins study of Adam Hamilton book on Sept. 18

When people talk about the problems they have with the church and Christianity, they frequently name behaviors and attitudes they believe are practiced too often by other Christians: judging others, rejecting science, and mixing politics and faith to name a few.
 
Connections starts a study of Adam Hamilton’s book “When Christians Get It Wrong” on Sept. 18. In the book, Hamilton tackles some of these issues and addresses how and why Christians get it right by being Christ in the world.

WMAA Book Club recently honored “To Kill a Mockingbird” on the 50th anniversary of its publication. Molly McNair led the discussion, which included a note from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee. [The note is in the frame held by Joan Morris.] Susan Stevenson is president of the book club.

The Women’s Ministry at Arborlawn will offer a new study beginning Apr. 20. “Prophets and Kings” from That the World May Know Ministries is a DVD-based study by Ray Vander Laan. From the author’s website: “Faith Lessons on the Prophets and Kings of Israel focuses on God’s faithfulness to His people in the wayward times of the kings and prophets and now to us in our society today.” 
 
This is a six-week study with daily homework. You must complete the first section of homework before our first meeting. Books are available locally and online. Study of Moore book begins April 6

A new WMAA study begins Wednesday, Apr. 6. Shirley Watkins will lead a 10-week study of Beth Moore’s book “A Woman’s Heart – God’s Dwelling Place” on Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Rooms 101-102.
 
From the Lifeway web site: “Perhaps no Old Testament event so dramatically illustrates God’s persistent desire to relate to His children as the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness. Through the tabernacle God initiated a deeper relationship with His Chosen People by bringing reconciliation and revealing His glory. Connections class moves upstairs

The Connections class has moved to its new space in Room 109 (the old infant nursery). The room is slowly being transformed into our new space. We have great new carpeting, new paint, and our decorator is hard at work to make this space feel like ours. We have just started a new study titled “The Me I Want to Be.” Join us this Sunday as we take a look at who God has created us to be and how we can flourish as that person. Study based on Hamilton book starts Sunday

A new study begins this coming Sunday (Mar. 20) that looks at Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book "Making Love Last a Lifetime." Jerry and Nancy Bristow will be leading the study from 5-6 p.m. on Sundays Mar. 20 through May 15. The group will take a one-week break for Easter Sunday, Apr. 24.
 
In this thoughtful and inspiring book, Hamilton offers some keys to helping develop a healthy, satisfying, and successful marriage. He draws on insights from conversations he’s had with more than two thousand single and married persons – from interviews, counseling sessions, and from his own experience in marriage. Hamilton also draws on lessons from the Bible to help people make love last a lifetime.
 
Explore topics rarely discussed in church, such as “What women (or men) wish men (or women) knew about women (or men)” and “After the honeymoon is over.” Married couples and singles are welcome.
