According to the Mayan calendar, the world will come to an end on Dec. 21 - which is just a couple of weeks away. Of course that’s disappointing news to a lot of us who haven’t even started on our Christmas shopping list.
I’m sure those who are knowledgeable about such predictions have done so through exhaustive scientific research and mathematical calculations to determine the actual date of the demise of the world. I’m also sure they’re aware of a history of doomsday predictions in every generation since the beginning of time that never quite panned out.
On Dec. 22 I suspect we’ll be found busy doing the things we normally do: tending to our business, spending time with family and friends, helping others, and getting ready for another Christmas. It’s called life.
This Christmas our thoughts aren’t focused on the end of the world but the beginning of a new creation. A Savior is born. The light shines in the darkness and we know again the full meaning of Immanuel - “God with us.”
So, make your plans for the 22nd with the full confidence that the world will be intact. But this year I pray your burden is a little lighter, your hope a little deeper, and your faith a little stronger; because that’s life - real life in the midst of real birth, real pain, real hope, and a real God-given God–delivered promise.
