Alternative entrance on the west side of the Sanctuary

Due to construction of the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel, the west entrance to the Arborlawn Sanctuary will be partially blocked for the duration of the project. You can still enter the Lower Commons from the west side through the double doors next to the main entrance.
 
Ushers and greeters will be on hand to guide you as we make the temporary adjustments. You’ll still be able to park on the west side of the building and enter with relative ease. An open sidewalk next to the construction trailer will lead you to the secondary entrance. The secondary entrance is special-needs accessible and leads to a door near the elevator in the Lower Commons area.
 
We simply want to alert you to the minor inconvenience posed by the construction of the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel so you are aware of the alternative entrance when you arrive at the church. This minor inconvenience, of course, is also a wonderful sign of growth and a celebration of the remarkable gift of the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel to the people of our congregation and community.
 
The people of Arborlawn have a gift for dealing with change and minor inconveniences better than anyone I know. We never lose sight of the big picture or the real blessing. A partially blocked entrance is not an inconvenience or a source of frustration; it’s a sign that God is at work in this place called Arborlawn.

Church communication focus group planned for August 5

 
A professor of organizational communication at TCU is working on a research project looking at how church leaders and members communicate with each other. For that project, he’s conducting focus groups at a number of area churches, including Arborlawn. The focus group here will be Sunday, Aug. 5 at 3 p.m. in Room 260. Your generosity is tangible, and we appreciate it: Kids Hope back-to-school event August 11

A number of Arborlawn members are currently working through the Kids Hope USA program serving as mentors to students at J.T. Stevens Elementary School. As the start of a new school year draws closer, Arborlawn is hosting a “Back to School Shop & Party” for the kids of J.T. Stevens on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to Noon in our Family Life Center.
 

In working with the kids and the school administration, the goal is to provide school uniforms and some school supplies for students as they begin a new school year. Through other generous donations, we’re also providing backpacks and serving a breakfast for the kids and their families. Shirley Watkins, Laurie Ryan, Ty Hodges and a host of other volunteers and mentors are helping make this possible.
 
If you would like to help, please consider volunteering your time on Aug. 11 to help distribute the items or make a contribution of $20 per child for as many kids as you wish to help. Prayer Ministry Q & A

Last week the Vineyard of Prayer room was dedicated, the Prayer Team was commissioned, and registration began for the upcoming Prayer Encounter Seminar on Sept. 15. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers regarding aspects of Arborlawn's Prayer Ministry.
 
VINEYARD OF PRAYER
 
Q: The Prayer Room is beautiful, but why do I need to come here? Can’t I just pray from home?
A: Absolutely pray from home! In fact, we are commanded to pray without ceasing. But this special dedicated space allows you to spend intimate time alone with God. It allows you to focus on Him, to feel His Presence and peace, and without the distractions from your daily life. You can talk to God about what’s on your heart and pray for others. Going to the Prayer Room is somewhat like having a "divine appointment" with God. Just as you schedule appointments in your weekly calendar, spending time with God also has to be intentional.
 
Q: I see the altar and kneeler and know that they are for personal confession and prayer. I see Bibles and hymnals and understand how to use them in personal worship. But what are the binders in the wood rack?
A: The binders contain helpful ways to guide prayers for others. There are seven binders that focus on specific areas of intercession: 1) Requests - When people within Arborlawn turn in prayer cards with nonconfidential requests, appropriate for a public prayer room, their name is listed in this binder. Because of privacy issues only names are listed, along with some Scriptures and sample prayers. Four weeks of requests are included, as well as a section to record God’s answers. 2) Staff - Each Arborlawn staff member is pictured, along with suggested prayers and Scriptures. 3) Ministries - Pray for Aborlawn’s missions and ministries. 4) City - Intercede for Fort Worth, as the Holy Spirit directs. 5) State - Pray for Texas and its many issues. 6) Country - Pray for the United States, its leaders, and the military. 7) World - Pray for God’s people around the world.
 
Q: When is the Vineyard of Prayer open?
A: The prayer room is open when the church is open during regular office hours, as well as evenings when other events or meetings take place. Check the church calendar for this information. Currently no reservations are required. Just come when God calls you to spend time with Him.
 
Q: What do I do if someone is already using the Prayer Room?
A: If the Prayer Room is in use and you wish to pray in private, we invite you to graciously wait or to pray in the Sanctuary until the Prayer Room is available. We are working on a scheduling system that will be implemented sometime in the future. Thank you for your patience.
 
PRAYER TEAM
 
Q: How do I join the Prayer Team?
A: Send us an email and request information for the various components of the Prayer Ministry.
 
Q: What are the requirements?
A: You will be asked to sign a Prayer Covenant that says you commit to be on the team for one year, to pray, and to keep all requests confidential.
 
Q: How do I submit a prayer request, or update one, or report an answer?
A: Fill out the blue and white Prayer Request Card located in the Sanctuary pew racks, or in the wooden holders on Prayer Boxes. Place the card in the offering plates or in one of the locked Prayer Boxes located in the Lower Commons, outside the Worship Center, and outside the church office. You can also submit the request online at ArborlawnUMC.org/prayer or by calling the church office.
 
Q: For how long are requests prayed?
A: Requests are prayed by the Intercessory Team for one month. Reported updates are prayed for an additional month.
 
PRAYER ENCOUNTER SEMINAR, SEPT. 15 (Read more and register here.)
 
Q: What does the $20 registration cover?
A: The registration fee only covers the speaker’s fee. The church will cover all other expenses. Scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the cost registration. We don’t want money to be an obstacle for anyone.
 
Q: Does the church need financial donations to cover these extra costs?
A: Yes, donations are appreciated. A special account has been established. Anyone wanting to donate may designate "Prayer Encounter" on your check’s memo line.
 
Q: Who is Dr. Terry Teykl?
A: Terry Teykl was a UMC pastor for 28 years and has been full-time in the prayer ministry since 1996. He has authored many books on prayer including: Divine Strongholds, Making Room to Pray, Pray the Price, Your Pastor Preyed On or Prayed For, How to Pray After You’ve Kicked the Dog, Acts 29, Blueprint for the House of Prayer, Outside the Camp, Praying Grace, and the Presence Based Church. Dr. Teykl’s warm humorous style makes him one of the most sought after speakers and seminar leaders in the country. He resides in Houston with his wife Kay, close to his children and grandchildren. Q: Why should I spend a Saturday at a prayer seminar?
A: This seminar will energize and equip you to more effectively communicate with God. It will awaken a passion for Him and a desire to grow closer to Him. It will be well worth the time and expense to experience more of God.
 
Q: How can I help?
A: There are many committees forming. We need lots of help, since this event is open to the entire CTC. Call the church office or contact Bonny Jenista to volunteer.

Student Voices: Cantabile performs at the National Cathedral, tours Washington, D. C.

Last fall, the Cantabile youth ensemble was created for grades 6-12. This group was different from the other children’s or youth choirs. This choir would be traveling to Washington D.C. in the summer to perform in the National Cathedral! All those who wanted to be in the choir were very excited about the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. Throughout the year, we rehearsed 10 different songs for the festival, as we had to perform all of them without our music.
 
Finally, on Thursday, June 28, we got to fly to Washington D.C. When we arrived, we had to learn how to use the Metro and go straight to our first rehearsal at the National City Christian Church. When we got there we learned there were eight choirs from all over the United States that came to participate in the YouthCUE festival of choirs. We just had five rehearsals to bring us all together and get ready for our concert on Monday night.
 

However, we didn’t just practice. We also did lots of sightseeing. On Friday we went to the Smithsonian Museums of American History and the Natural History Museum. We later had pizza at a place called Aria Pizza. We thought that was a good place for a choir to eat! That night a severe thunderstorm shook our nation’s capital and was one of the worst storms there in 100 years. Many people were without power, including one other choir, but we were lucky.
 
One of the highlights of our trip was a tour of the capitol building. That tour included a movie with information about the capitol and tours of two old Congress and Senate rooms, both dating back to the 1890s. We also got to visit old town Alexandria, where we were able to take a Potomac River tour that gave us great views of all the landmarks along the river, including all the monuments. On Sunday we went to church at the National Cathedral, and they recognized us out loud in the service for coming.   
 
Other fun things we saw on our trip were the Washington Monument, the White House, a detective tour of Abraham Lincoln’s death, and the Air and Space Museum. On Monday morning we held our final rehearsal at the National Cathedral and got to explore Georgetown.
 
Mr. Stoker surprised us by coming on the day of our concert. It was an amazing experience singing at the National Cathedral. It sounded awesome with the sound of the 200 voices ringing off the walls of one of the most beautiful places ever. It was like God was right beside you.
 
We had a great time in D.C., and we are hoping to double or even triple in size next year. Thank you, Ms. Portele, for leading our choir and planning our trip. Thank you, Ms. Gossett, for also helping us. We appreciate all the support we received from Arborlawn. We had an awesome experience, and I hope you can have this experience with Cantabile too.

Groundbreaking July 22 for the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel

 
Join us this Sunday, July 22, at 12:15 p.m. for a special groundbreaking ceremony as we begin construction of the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel. The ceremony will take place outside the west doors of the Sanctuary on the future site of the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel. The chapel is made possible by the remarkable generosity of Jud Cramer and family.

A Word from the Pastor: Connect the dots

The ability to connect the dots is an essential part of understanding our lives. The dots, meaning our collective experiences, memories and significant moments, are everywhere. It doesn’t mean everything that happens to us makes perfect sense when we string it all together. It may mean that when we reflect back on the events of our lives we’re able to gain a better perspective of how all the seemingly random and unconnected moments of our lives begin to reflect a larger purpose and a bigger story.
 

Two people fall in love. They start out with virtually nothing, build a life and a family together, experience the greatest joys and deepest tragedies together. Sixty two years later she is gone. But the memories they share and the love they have endures forever.
 
Another couple ventures out into the world hand in hand. The journey brings them a lifetime of unforgettable moments and memories. In the midst of all the unexpected twists and turns, they finally begin to understand and appreciate how rich and wonderful life has been. After forty-seven years together, now he is gone. The pain is deep but the love is so much deeper.
 
So, in the future when people ask where the Elizabeth Cramer Chapel came from or how we as a church came to be the proud owners of a golf cart also known affectionately as the “Dub Mobile,” I hope you’ll help them connect the dots. Tell them about Elizabeth and Jud Cramer. Tell them about Dub and Diane Graves. Tell them about the thousands of things you see when you look around this place that can be traced back to something in our past, something that came long before we arrived where we are today.
 
Because every good thing in this place starts with the deepest kind of love we will ever know in this world. Connect the dots. Eventually it will lead you all the way back to God; which is where all of this starts and where all of it one day will find its completion.

The Dub Mobile has arrived!

 
Perhaps you’ve already seen the new golf cart patrolling the parking lots and transporting people to the door of the church. That cart is a special gift given to Arborlawn by the friends and family of Dub Graves. It’s affectionately known as the “Dub Mobile” in honor of one of the more remarkable men we’ve known and in keeping with his love of people and fun.
 
The “Dub Mobile” has already been used to transport hundreds of guests who came to the Fourth of July concert and others who came to worship with us this past Sunday. We recently blessed the golf cart and commissioned it to serve others in memory and appreciation of Dub Graves. If you’re wondering about how we can bless a golf cart, go back and read Acts 8:26-40. It’s not just a golf cart; it’s a chariot that leads people to Jesus.

Arborlawn Prayer Team to be commissioned July 22

The Arborlawn Prayer Ministry team will be commissioned this Sunday, July 22, at the 11 a.m. worship service. Team Leaders Bonny Jenista and Kathy Wilcox, along with a number of other prayer ministry team members, will be recognized and commissioned for service as they launch a new Prayer Ministry for the people of our church and community. We also invite you to see the newly prepared prayer room on the east side of the Sanctuary just off the Lower Commons. Prayer is a vital and important part of our congregation, and all of us are called to pray for one another.

Our partnership with J. T. Stevens Elementary (through Kids Hope USA) has produced (and is producing) many fantastic relationships between the kids and their mentors.

Prayer Encounter Seminar: September 15

 
Arborlawn's Prayer Ministry is hosting an all-day, CTC-wide prayer seminar on Saturday, Sept. 15. Join us that day from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as we welcome the compelling speaker and author Terry Tekyl and his seminar called "Prayer Encounter." The seminar costs $20 per person ($25 after Sept. 2 and at the door), and free childcare is available. Lunch is included in the seminar cost.
 
Terry Teykl’s warm humorous style makes him one of the most sought after speakers and seminar leaders in the country. He pastored for 28 years and is now full time in the prayer ministry. He has authored many books on prayer and is the founder of Renewal Ministries (PrayForRenewal.org). He resides in Houston with his wife Kay. They have four grown children and several grandchildren.

Student Voices: Building sanctuaries

Mission Trips are beyond a doubt something spectacular. That being said, not enough people get to experience the full extent of what can be gained from participating in one. I realize because of the recent developments happening around the church, many may find this title a bit misleading. But before moving on, I would urge you to hear a testament from an Arborlawn youth. 
 

For those not familiar with the phrase “Mission Trips,” let me explain the basic idea. This is a journey about a week long taken with fellow Christians in order to spread the word of  Jesus through acts of kindness. The trip consists of youth and adults. This year the trip took us to Galveston to help people that were still trying to repair damages done by the hurricane in 2008. The goal is to help those in need and those who have no means of helping themselves. Sometimes it can seem like hard manual labor, but it is important to note that we are not just fixing homes; we are restoring and building new sanctuaries. From building fences, roofing, painting, installing doors, plumbing, or cooking for the workers, there is a job to be done by any skill set and any physical ability.
 
Each client we help is a person who is in need of some kind of care. They are in need of healing and perhaps need to feel God's presence more at this moment than any other. They need a sanctuary to find respite in. We are the hands and feet, we are the eyes and ears, we are the voices of God's love. We attempt to restore peace of mind through the grace of God by making repairs to their once safe haven. It is an opportunity to share our Christianity and, with each interaction, a chance to grow from our client's expression of the spirit. For one week, Hebrews 12:1 describes our situation quite well: “Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
 
What one gets from the experience varies greatly from person to person. But for one week we are immersed in a situation that I think Jesus would encourage His followers to experience. For this week we are away from our own distractions, and we are focused on the message that Jesus preached about taking action and helping one another. We worship together, we break bread together, we laugh, we cry, and we strengthen each other. We help each of us build up our personal sanctuary while restoring those of others, where all can retreat and find His grace and His mercy.

Prayer Room dedication, commissioning of Prayer Team on July 22

With great excitement and in thanksgiving to God, the Prayer Ministry announces the opening of the Prayer Room (the Vineyard of Prayer) on Sunday, July 22. Also that day, during the 11 a.m. worship service, we will dedicate this special space and invite the Presence of God. This is so it will be holy and set-apart for personal worship. The Prayer Room will be a place of quiet, serenity, and peace where all can spend intimate time with God.
 

The Vineyard of Prayer will be open for personal use any time the church is open, during office hours, and in the evenings when other events or meetings take place. No signups or scheduling is required. If the Prayer Room is in use and you wish to pray in private, we invite you to wait and pray in the Sanctuary until the Prayer Room is available. Come to the Vineyard of Prayer to pray for yourself, those God has given you, and to intercede for our staff, church, community, nation, and world. You may use the specially designed prayer-focus binders and guides. Come feel God’s presence.
    
The Prayer Ministry would like to express our gratitude to God for providing the funds, talents, and gifts that made the Vineyard of Prayer possible. These include: contributions to the Melissa Jenista Memorial Vineyard of Prayer fund; anonymous financial donations and gifts; Lisa Voight, art painting on the walls; John Reed, wood crafting the altar and kneeling bench; Shirley Watkins, sewing the kneeling cushion; Lisa Marino, monogramming the prayer binders; Kay Cornelius and Wayne Corbett, installation of the carpet; Steven Johnson and Bill Rogers, lighting and electrical solutions; Bonny Jenista, Charlene Johnston, Doris Lake, and Kathy Wilcox, designing the prayer-focus binders; and Herman Holbert, coordination of workers, assembly of lamp table, and hanging of pictures.
 

Also on July 22, the Prayer Ministry Team will be commissioned during the 11 a.m. worship service. These are people on whom God has placed a special calling and burden to pray for others. Each week the prayer team intercedes on behalf of individuals within the congregation and community, as well as for the ministers and church staff. The prayer team also provides training on prayer, special guest speakers, and corporate prayer opportunities for the congregation. The Prayer Team honors God by “standing in the gap” for others. During the commissioning service, we ask for God’s special anointing of these prayer warriors and the work they perform. We look forward to many others feeling God’s call to join the team.
    
May Arborlawn continue becoming a “House and People of Prayer.” To God be the Glory!

Camp Vine August 6-10; students get to learn and present musical about the Old Testament

Excitement is building as time nears for Camp Vine! If you are exiting 1st through 5th Grades, join us Aug. 6-10, 9 a.m. to Noon each day, for this wonderful music and arts experience. (Read more and register starting at ArborlawnUMC.org/campvine.)
 
This will be an awesome week of creative fun, music, pottery and photography, culminating in a huge celebration on Friday evening, Aug. 10.  Everyone is invited to attend the Celebration Dinner at 6 p.m. that night in the Family Life Center. Please make a reservation by calling the Church Office at 817-731-0701. On Celebration night, visit the Art Gallery in the Upper Commons, where the kids will share their creations.
 

Then enjoy the production of “The Old Testament: Fast Forward” at 7 p.m. in the Worship Center. All of you who read the Bible in 90 Days with us last winter will enjoy this charming presentation by the campers. Expect to hear your favorite Bible stories in a new and fresh way!

A Word from the Pastor: Finding our pathways

It is a question that has reverberated through the ages. “Do you love me?” Sometimes it is spoken aloud, other times it is a question asked within the heart. The way we answer sometimes comes through the spoken word and other times in the ways that we act and interact with one another. Jesus asked this exact question to Peter three times in the Gospel of John, and he asks it of each of us every day. 
     
I have been so touched by the gracious hospitality and words of welcome that have been shown to Aaron and me over the past few weeks as we have started to find our place here at Arborlawn. The words “Welcome Home,” truly are spoken with sincerity and meaning within this community of faith. We are all searching for something, and as humans we all have a desire to find a place that we can call our own. I have encountered many who have recently united with Arborlawn, and they share the same story of reception and welcome. One of the ways that we as the church answer Jesus’ question, “Do you love me,” is in the way we welcome one another as we journey together - always expectantly looking ahead to what it is God has in store for us. 
 

It is a blessing to welcome one another on the journey and to be able to share the next chapters of our lives together. Soon we will be developing pathways that will enable those who come to Arborlawn - those who are seeking a safe place of discovery and growth - to find an intentional path that will help all of us connect to each other while drawing closer to Christ.
    
Thank you for being faithful to the invitation to follow Christ. May we be mindful of the many ways we answer the question, “Do you love me,” as we continue to seek out and welcome home those who will soon join us on the journey.

Educational journeys with the Bishop planned for winter/spring 2013

 
Central Texas Conference Bishop Mike Lowry is leading a journey to Taizé, France May 18-29, 2013 for young adults ages 17-30. The application period for this special pilgrimage is June through August 2012. Participants will be responsible for contributing $500 each toward the cost of the trip, either individually or through the local church. The remainder of the trip cost will be underwritten by the Missional Wisdom Foundation.
 
The bishop and his wife, Jolynn, are also leading a trip to the Holy Land in January. Holy Land Classic 2013 departs D/FW International Airport on Jan. 15 for a 10-day journey to sites in and around Jerusalem. Four interesting trip extensions are also available.
