SINGLES GROUP AUG. 25
Arborlawn’s Singles Group is holding its final meeting of the summer on Thursday, Aug. 25 in Room 214 at 6 p.m. We’ll be covering the second installment of the Redefining Grace study. We’ll go out to dinner afterward. This autumn we’ll change our meeting night to the third Tuesday at that time. More details later.
WMAA BOOK CLUB
The WMAA Book Club will have its first fall meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 220, Main Building. We will discuss The Sanctuary of Outcasts: A Memoir by Neil White.
A NOTE OF THANKS
Dear friends: On behalf of the whole Wordinger family I would like to thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and presence during this recent difficult period. Barbara and I often remembered fondly our time at Westcliff United Methodist Church. I pray God’s blessings on Arborlawn as you move into your new facility and continue to grow. In Christ, --Bob Wordinger.
PRAYERS
We offer prayers of sympathy to Kay Nichols in the death of her mother, Ruth Nichols, and prayers of thanksgiving for Jeoffrey Johnson and Adrienne Nicholls, who were recently married.
STEPHEN MINISTRY
Arborlawn’s Stephen Ministry will host the third annual Lunch and Learn on Sunday, Aug. 21, immediately following the late services. Stephen Ministry provides short-term, one-to-one, distinctively Christian caring to members of Arborlawn in times of need. Perhaps illness, job changes, loss, divorce, or relocation have added stress. And someone to listen, encourage, pray, help to find useful resources, and hold your concerns in confidence would be helpful. This is the role of a Stephen Minister. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Stephen Minister, join us on Aug. 21 for Lunch and Learn. For more details, contact Judy Williamson.
EL BUEN SAMARITANO
Arborlawn will host another dinner to benefit El Buen Samaritano UMC on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 5-7 p.m., in the Gathering Area. A Mexican dinner will be prepared and served by members of El Buen Samaritano. Take-out boxes will also be available. El Buen Samaritano UMC is still in need of a new air conditioning system, which will cost approximately $35,000. Tickets are $10. You may reserve your tickets through the church office or purchase at the door. If you are unable to attend the dinner, you are welcome to make a donation. We appreciate your generosity.
PARENT’S ODD NIGHT OUT
Effective in September, the price to attend Parent’s Odd Night Out will increase by $5. The new price will be $25 for the first child plus $5 for any additional children in the same family. We will have a $35 maximum charge per family. Parent’s Odd Night Out is held on odd-numbered Fridays of the month from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. For reservations or more information, contact Nell Cantwell at 817-731-0701 ext. 106.
MOTHER’S DAY OUT HOURS
Mother’s Day Out currently operates from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Starting Sept. 1, the program will expand by an hour, opening at 9:00 a.m. and running through 2:30 p.m. MDO is for children age 6-weeks through Pre-K. We welcome your child! Questions? Contact Melissa Hedger at 817-731-0701, x128.
PEWS TO BE AVAILABLE
Another tangible milestone in our move into the new facilities is the coming need to do something with our current Sanctuary pews. Once we hold our final service in the Sanctuary, the pews will be available for a church or other organization that could use them. We have 50 pews, each measuring 19-feet long, and the price is negotiable. If you know of any groups that might be in need of pews, have them call us at 817-731-0701.
NICA FOR AUGUST: DETERGENT
The Northside Inter-Church Agency is asking for laundry detergent for the month of August. Bring donations to the NICA baskets in the steam table room next to the kitchen or to the SAM Building.
MERRYMAKERS: MONTHLY
Seniors, we hope you’ll join us in Merrymakers. Our monthly potluck meal is on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Our next gathering is Wednesday, Aug. 24. We are not just about making trips into the community, and we do not stop meeting during the summer. For first time visitors, you don’t even need to bring a dish. Just be our guest. We shall enjoy your company, and we hope you’ll like us enough to come again and again. We meet in the SAM Building, and we have prayer at Noon followed by feasting. At 1 p.m. some stay for games for an hour or so, and some rush home for a well deserved nap. For more information, please contact Marilyn Anderson.
MERRYMAKERS: BINGO NIGHT
Merrymakers (Arborlawn’s Seniors Ministry) invites all seniors to Bingo Night on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the SAM Building. Use the side entrance. We will meet in the the Students area through the glass doors. Cookies, popcorn, and lemonade will be served. We will have prizes, and the blackout prize is two movie tickets. Bring a friend and come have fun with us.
ACOLYTE TRAINING
Acolyte training for new Confirmands will be Sunday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. in the new sanctuary. Contact Kim Cordell if you have any questions.
AL-ANON GROUP
Are you troubled by someone else’s drinking? Al-Anon is for you! Group meetings began Monday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Room S-23, SAM Building. For more information, contact Johnny Johnson.
GOOD NEWS: FROGS IN THE FOOD PANTRY
Thirty-eight nutrition students from TCU will be staffing Arborlawn’s Food Pantry on Wednesday evenings this fall. This is the second year students in the Food and Culture Class at TCU have helped at the Food Pantry. Arborlawn volunteers are needed to work with the students from 5:30-7 p.m. Volunteers can select which Wednesday evenings to work. People needing food can come by appointment after their work on Wednesdays evenings. The Food Pantry is also open from 9 a.m. to Noon on Monday and Wednesday mornings each week. Register to volunteer at the Food Pantry in the Gathering Area.
WESTAID
Some days as many as fifty heads of households come to WestAid for assistance. Some come because of unemployment, some are senior citizens raising grandchildren (and even great grandchildren), some have experienced illness and are unable to provide food for their families. Many tell us they have to choose between paying the rent or buying food. Many families have school children home for the summer and making their own meals. WestAid is in need of child-friendly food such as peanut butter, canned pasta, soups, cereal, etc. in order to help these families. Summer has taken a toll on WestAid’s food supply, and shelves are getting bare. WestAid depends on donations, and any non-perishable foods are appreciated as are monetary donations. Your help is appreciated and used wisely to help our neighbors in need. Donations may be dropped off in the WestAid boxes in the SAM Building and in the steam table room adjacent to the kitchen. Details: Contact Peggy Grona or WestAid (817-737-9338).
UCC NEEDS FOR AUGUST
United Community Centers needs money for school uniform polo shirts for elementary children. If you give your money through the church, we can purchase the shirts tax deductible and at a group discount price. The generous donation of uniforms this summer is being used wisely. However, we found there was a void in school polo shirts for children. We will have to buy most of the shirts needed. If you donate, please mark checks with “UCC school uniforms” in the memo line. All we can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. All the volunteer help you have given this summer to the Clothes Closet and to the Styles & Smiles Fashion Show (and all of the clothes you have shared) are appreciated so much. This summer we have had new families with children who are so grateful and senior citizens (who come the third Friday of each month) who are so excited with the quality of clothes we have to offer. Arborlawn is such a blessing to so many people.
