SINGLES GROUP: FINAL MEETING OF THE SUMMER
Arborlawn's Singles Group is holding its final meeting of the summer on Thursday, Aug. 25 in Room 214 at 6 p.m. We'll be covering the second installment of the Redefining Grace study. Then we'll go out to dinner afterward. We're looking forward to a busy autumn. We'll change our meeting night to the third Tuesday at that time. More details later.
WMAA BOOK CLUB
The WMAA Book Club will have its first fall meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 220, Main Building. We will discuss The Sanctuary of Outcasts: A Memoir by Neil White.
STEPHEN MINISTRY LUNCH AND LEARN
Arborlawn's Stephen Ministry will host the third annual Lunch and Learn on Sunday, Aug. 21, immediately following the late services. Stephen Ministry provides short-term, one-to-one, distinctively Christian caring to members of Arborlawn in times of need. Perhaps illness, job changes, loss, divorce, or relocation have added stress. And someone to listen, encourage, pray, help to find useful resources, and hold your concerns in confidence would be helpful. This is the role of a Stephen Minister. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Stephen Minister - including opportunities to serve and upcoming training - please join us on Aug. 21 for Lunch and Learn. For more information, please contact Judy Williamson.
EL BUEN SAMARITANO: A/C FUNDRAISER
Arborlawn will host another dinner to benefit El Buen Samaritano UMC on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 5:00-7:00 p.m., in the Gathering Area. A Mexican dinner will be prepared and served by members of El Buen Samaritano. Take-out boxes will also be available. El Buen Samaritano UMC is still in need of a new air conditioning system, which will cost approximately $35,000. Tickets are $10. You may reserve your tickets through the church office or purchase at the door. If you are unable to attend the dinner, you are welcome to make a donation. We appreciate your generosity; especially in this Texas heat!
WESTAID
Some days as many as fifty heads of households come to WestAid for assistance. Some come because of unemployment, some are senior citizens raising grandchildren (and even great grandchildren), some have experienced illness and are unable to provide food for their families. Many tell us they have to choose between paying the rent or buying food. Many families have school children home for the summer and making their own meals. WestAid is in need of child-friendly food such as peanut butter, canned pasta, soups, cereal, etc. in order to help these families. Summer has taken a toll on WestAid’s food supply, and shelves are getting bare. WestAid depends on donations, and any non-perishable foods are appreciated as are monetary donations. Your help is appreciated and used wisely to help our neighbors in need. Donations may be dropped off in the WestAid boxes in the SAM Building and in the steam table room adjacent to the kitchen. Details: Peggy Grona (817-292-1066) or WestAid (817-737-9338).
NICA FOR AUGUST: DETERGENT
The Northside Inter-Church Agency is asking for laundry detergent for the month of August. Bring donations to the NICA baskets in the steam table room next to the kitchen or to the SAM Building.
MERRYMAKERS BINGO NIGHT AUG. 26
Merrymakers (Arborlawn’s Seniors Ministry) invites all seniors to Bingo Night on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the SAM Building. Use the side entrance. We will meet in the the Students area through the glass doors. Cookies, popcorn, and lemonade will be served. We will have prizes, and the blackout prize is two movie tickets. Bring a friend and come have fun with us. Also, the next Merrymakers potluck luncheon is Wednesday, Aug. 24 in the SAM Building.
UCC NEEDS FOR AUGUST
United Community Centers needs money for school uniform polo shirts for elementary children. If you give your money through the church, we can purchase the shirts tax deductible and at a group discount price. The generous donation of uniforms this summer is being used wisely. However, we found there was a void in school polo shirts for children. We will have to buy most of the shirts needed. If you donate, please mark checks with "UCC school uniforms" in the memo line. All we can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. All the volunteer help you have given this summer to the Clothes Closet and to the Styles & Smiles Fashion Show (and all of the clothes you have shared) are appreciated so much. This summer we have had new families with children who are so grateful and senior citizens (who come the third Friday of each month) who are so excited with the quality of clothes we have to offer. Arborlawn is such a blessing to so many people.
