Kids choirs in concert evening of May 1; Choir Camp June 13-17

Join us on Sunday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary for our Spring Children’s Choir Concert. The Cherub, Carol, Canticle, and Cantate Choirs will sing and the bells will ring. It will be a wonderful night of music and celebration for the children. We hope the sanctuary will be filled with supporters!   
 


Also, mark your calendars for Children’s Choir Camp, which will be held the week of June 13–17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. This year’s theme is “Happily Forever After.” Choir camp is for any student who has completed 1st through 6th grades. We will spend our week producing a musical, which will include learning music and solos, acting and speaking, creative movement, creating props and scenery, and other fun. We provide snacks each day, and students bring their own sack lunches. On Friday, June 17 at noon, the entire congregation is invited to come watch our show.

A few more volunteer spots remain in Arborlawn's Mayfest booth

Arborlawn is sponsoring a booth at this year’s Mayfest (May 5-8), one of Fort Worth’s most enjoyable festivals.
 

Volunteer with us! We still need people in the booth for the following times: Friday, May 6, 3:30-7 p.m.; and Sunday, May 8, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 1:30-4:30 p.m., and 4:30-7:30 p.m. 
 
Arborlawn’s booth is called “From the Heart.” Children can decorate one-of-a-kind Mother’s Day cards using potato and apple stamps, crayons, and markers. This should be great fun for everyone!
 
You will get in free to Mayfest on the day you volunteer. All volunteers must be 13 years and older. If you want to volunteer with a younger child, you have to stay with him or her at all times. All volunteers will also be given a free T-shirt to wear while they work the booth.

A Word from the Pastor: Leave the lights on

It was another good day at Arborlawn. The music was glorious, the sanctuary crowded, the Spirit palpable, and God’s people fully present to celebrate the resurrection. Before we move ahead, I want to offer a couple of comments while Easter Sunday is still fresh on our minds and still visible in our rear view mirror.
 
1) Thank you for being the congregation you are and the faithfulness you bring to this place.
 
2) Thanks to those who graciously gave up their seats and moved to the balcony to make room for our guests. Thanks to so many of you who parked in the outer lots for the same purpose. Your actions spoke volumes about what kind of church we hope and aspire to be; a church of servant leaders.
 
3) Thank you to the hundreds of people who volunteered their time and offered their gifts of ministry and service; such as greeters, ushers, teachers, worship team leaders, choir members, hospitality teams, children and student ministry leaders, etc. You are the heart and soul of what we do every week.
 
4) All I can say is, “What a day! What a church! What a God!”
 
In most churches, the post Easter schedule is normally designed for winding down, scaling back activities, and taking a much needed break. In so many churches, Easter marks the big finale to a busy and hectic schedule. Easter for some means the end. It means after it’s all said and done, the final instructions are: “Last one out be sure and turn out the lights.”  
 
Not so much here at Arborlawn. We’ll leave the lights on – if you don’t mind – because Easter for us is a new beginning. We have work to do in the coming weeks; meaning there are students to be confirmed, mothers to be honored, and graduating seniors to recognize. In between all that is a God who sends us and people who need us. So don’t turn out the lights just yet. We have a mission to follow, a community to serve, construction to complete, and a kingdom to build. Leave the lights on. We have work to do.

May Missions Baskets: see them starting this Sunday

Arborlawn’s United Methodist Women group is once again sponsoring this popular event to raise money for the vital programs of United Community Centers (UCC). By participating in May Missions Baskets, you help fund programs like the Sensational Poly Girls, the Styles and Smiles Fashion Show, and other initiatives that make a real difference in kids’ lives.
 
Tickets are $5 each and will be sold in the Gathering Area between services on May 1, May 8, May 15, and May 22. The drawing is slated for the Gathering Area on May 22 after the 11 a.m. and 11:11 a.m. services.

Vacation Bible Camp (July 18-22) to use cooking theme

Vacation Bible Camp has a cooking theme this year. Join us July 18-22 for Shake It Up Cafe - Where Kids Carry Out God's Recipe. All children age 3 (by Sept. 1, 2010) through exiting 2nd grade are welcome! [PLEASE NOTE: The age range of 1st through 6th grade listed in the Apr. 29 print edition of The Vine was a misprint.]
 

 
Shake It Up Cafe is set in an exciting restaurant and kitchen environment. This curriculum offers your children opportunities to celebrate biblical festivals from both the Old and New Testaments. These exciting and engaging celebrations will inspire your chefs to develop life-changing habits as they grow and become followers of God.  
 
Online registration runs through July 5. If you would like a VBC T-shirt you much register by June 29. Those registering after June 29 will not receive a T-shirt. We also need adult volunteers. Mission Camp: June 20-23 for kids

Mission camp is coming up soon. It's for kids exiting 3rd grade through 5th grade. It meets June 20-23, 5 to 8 p.m. each evening (some times may vary depending on the activity). Cost: $50 (includes a T-shirt)  
 
Mission Camp consists of four evenings of different mission experiences in our community. Our young missionaries will have a great opportunity to help others and learn about specific needs in their own community. Some places we have helped in the past are Ronald McDonald House, First Methodist Street Missions, Agape Meal at Broadway Baptist Church, Waterford Retirement Home, and many more. An exact schedule of places will be mailed to you the week before camp. We will also have a fun activity planned after our mission each evening.

Nedra Sims retires after long, successful career in defense industry

Arborlawn member Nedra Sims recently retired from Lockheed Martin after more than 46 years of service to the company. A retirement party was given in her honor on Friday, Mar. 25 at the company's Fort Worth campus. More than 200 friends and family attended this special event for Ms. Sims. Nedra, wearing a beautiful lime green suit with an orchid pinned on the lapel, was presented an Energizer Bunny toy to commemorate her long work life. 
 
Several of her colleagues spoke during the reception, and the remarks lasted for well over an hour. (There are plenty of work stories to tell from a career stretching almost half a century!)
 
One of the many mementos Sims received during the event was a Lockheed Martin multi-airplane plaque. Nedra was disappointed that it did not have the B-58 her husband flew in the war, but loved the plaque anyway. The presenter reminded her that things change and the more modern airplanes are now on the plaques. Everyone reportedly had a good laugh about that one. Nedra was also presented a large B-58 Bomber airplane model. This gesture brought Nedra to tears; she was thrilled, touched, and honored. 
 
We're so very proud of you, Nedra Sims, for your work ethic and dedication to the defense industry that keeps America strong. Enjoy your retirement; you've earned it!

At-home exercise seminar May 12

Arborlawn’s Faith Community Nurse (FCN) ministry is presenting “Exercising Your Demons: Core Strengthening at Home” on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in Room 213 SAM.
 
This program features Dr. Debbie Rhea, a TCU professor, and Sara Schaffer, owner of North Texas Physical Therapy and certified in sports medicine. This presentation examines bad habits and how we can change them through the way we think and schedule what we do. Dr. Rhea and Ms. Schaffer will talk about the more productive activities to practice regularly; not only now but for a lifetime. There will be audience participation with the presenters as they demonstrate some physical exercises and activities that will help all of us as we grow older gracefully. 
 
Dr. Rhea has presented at over 250 different local, regional, national, and international conferences on many topics, including behavioral change and motivation and eating disorders. Ms. Schaffer has lectured TCU music students on repetitive strain injuries, TCU School of Kinesiology on career planning, TVS School on knee injury prevention, and Luke’s Locker Runner’s club on injury prevention.

UMW meeting Tuesday evening, May 3

On Tuesday, May 3, the General Meeting of United Methodist Women will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Gathering Area. All women are invited. (The Executive Committee meets earlier that day at 10 a.m. in the Parlor.)
 
The program for the day is entitled “Joy to the World.” The Rev. Brenda Weir, newly retired director of the Metropolitan Board of Missions, will speak. Brenda taught one of the studies at School of Missions. She is a popular teacher as well as an inspirational and informative speaker. Do not miss this program!
 
Dessert and coffee will be served.
 
Contributions of food for the Arborlawn Food Pantry is the mission project for the month.
 
The next meeting of United Methodist Women is Sept. 13.

Spiritual gifts class slated for May 2-3

The "Your Spiritual Gifts" class is Monday and Tuesday, May 2-3 at 6:30 p.m. each night in the Parlor.
God gives each believer spiritual gifts. These gifts are given in addition to talents, IQ scores, athletic ability, and personality type. The Gifts of the Spirit are to be used for the great good of all. Many believers are unaware that they have spiritual gifts. Many who know about them cannot name them. This class helps people consider their own spiritual gifts and how to them at Arborlawn. 
 
In the first of the two sessions, the spiritual gifts are defined and assessed for each participant. The second session shows participants how to apply spiritual gifts to life. 
 

 
This class is one of the four four connecting and welcoming classes at Arborlawn. The others are Introduction to Arborlawn, Understanding Yourself and Others as Children of God, and The Three Simple Rules (which will next be offered in June).

Kindergarten class reenacts Easter morning

After the reading of the lesson by Ms. Laurie, the kindergarten searched the room for the twelve well hidden letters. After finding eleven, Griff figured out the first one must be “Jesus," with Meredith’s help inserting the S. Sandy figured the red letters must be “is” and Griff put the four green letters to spell “alive." Jesus is Alive! (The A was found after cleaning up.)
 
Sandy (who quickly wanted to be Mary Magdalene), raced to the tomb in darkness provided by Barrett (light operator). When Mary (Sandy) arrived, she found Zoe (Angel 1) and Meredith (Angel 2) standing by the empty tomb. Mary shouted “Jesus is gone” and ran to tell Peter, played by Grant, and John, played by Griff. All three ran back over to the tomb. The angels, Zoe and Meredith, shouted “Jesus is Alive,” and on key Barrett lit up the room. Raney, who beautifully played Jesus, stood up (on a chair) and shouted “I have risen.“ Everyone won academy awards for their performances!
 
Everyone then modeled their Easter clothes. Raney shone with a beautiful purple smocked dress with matching bow. Sandy showed her new pink and white dress with matching shoes. Grant was sporting a new shirt with a very dapper tie. Barrett looked sharp in bright red shirt. Griff showed a lot of class with his green checked button down shirt. Zoe was very striking with her white and silver lacy dress. Meredith looked wonderful in her new blue and white dress. Ms. Laurie looked very bright and cheery in her flowered jacket. The  class looked wonderful for Easter, and Mr. Roy was very proud to be their teacher.

UMM raises money for Building Fund

Arborlawn's United Methodist Men would like to thank all who participated in purchasing the plants we have been selling the past few weeks. The plants were delivered the Wednesday of Easter week, and 99 percent have been picked up.
  
The profits for this project are being donated to Arborlawn's Building Fund. The plant sales generated about $1,000 for the cause.
 
A big thanks also goes to the men and women who helped sell the plants, unload the truck, organize the plants, and pass them out to Arborlawn members who participated. This would not have been such a big success without the help. 

The Arborlawn family is special, and we thank you for your support in helping make this Spring Plant Sale the most successfulone yet.

Melanoma most dangerous form of skin cancer

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than two million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are found in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, accounted for approximately 68,130 cases of skin cancer in 2010. This type of skin cancer begins in the melanocytes – the cells that produce the skin coloring known as melanin. Melanin helps protect the deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. 
 
Melanoma is almost always curable when it is detected in its early stages. Although melanoma accounts for only a small percentage of skin cancer, it is far more dangerous than other skin cancers and causes most skin cancer deaths. Risk factors for non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers include: unprotected and/or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation; fair complexion; occupational exposures to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, or radium; family history; multiple or atypical moles; and severe sunburns as a child.
 
Skin cancer can be found early, and both doctors and patients play important roles in finding it. Symptoms include: 1) Any change on the skin, especially in the size or color of a mole or other darkly pigmented growth or spot, or a new growth; 2) Scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or change in the appearance of a bump or nodule; 3) The spread of pigmentation beyond its border, such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark; and 4) A change in sensation, itchiness, tenderness, or pain.
 
The best ways to lower the risk of skin cancer are to avoid intense sunlight for long periods of time and to practice sun safety.
 
1) Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
 
2) Seek shade: Look for shade, especially in the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. Practice the shadow rule and teach it to children: If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest.
 
3) Slip on a shirt: Cover up with protective clothing to guard as much skin as possible when you are out in the sun. Choose comfortable clothes made of tightly woven fabrics that you cannot see through when held up to a light.
 
4) Slop on sunscreen: Use sunscreen and lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen (about a palmful) and reapply after swimming, toweling dry, or perspiring. Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days.
 
5) Slap on a hat: Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck. If you choose a baseball cap, remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen.
 
6) Wrap on sunglasses: Wear sunglasses with 99 percent to 100 percent UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
 
7) Follow these practices to protect your skin even on cloudy or overcast days. UV rays travel through clouds.
 
8) Avoid other sources of UV light. Tanning beds and sun lamps are dangerous because they can damage your skin.
 
9) Check all of your skin once a month for changes, including size, shape, color, and number of spots.

Heartsaver course offered with new AHA guidelines

What would you do if someone you loved had a heart attack? The Heartsaver AED course teaches the new American Heart Association guidelines of how to do adult/child and infant CPR, use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), and how to help an adult/child and infant who is choking. 
 
The course is certified by the American Heart Association and is taught by AHA-certified instructors. Course completion cards will be awarded to students after successful demonstration of CPR skills. No written test is required to pass the course.
 
Two classes are scheduled for Saturday, May 21, and each class has a limit of 12 students. The morning class meets from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., while the afternoon offering is from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants must pre-register to take this course.
 
You can register at the table in the Gathering Area on Sundays May 1 and May 8 or by contacting Rev. Pam Perrine. Registration deadline is May 8. There is a nominal fee for the student workbook, CD, and certification card. The student workbook needs to be reviewed before class. Checks should be made out to Arborlawn with Faith Community Nurse-CPR in the memo.

WESTAID NEEDS NON-PERISHABLE ITEMS
WestAid is very appreciative of the donations received from Arborlawn, making it possible to assist the many families. WestAid currently needs basic food items such as mac and cheese, cereal, canned green beans, and canned fruit. Any non-perishable items are always in demand, as more families are in need than ever before. Items may be placed in the WestAid basket near the parlor and in the SAM Building. Watch the next print version of The Vine for a story about WestAid's need to relocate in the autumn.

Arborlawn's MOMS Group (Mothers Offering Mutual Support) will meet on Tuesday, Apr. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 105 for fellowship and a focus on money saving strategies. We'll have a coupon swap, so save those coupons you know you won't use and bring them to swap with other moms. “WHY JESUS?” STUDY STARTS APRIL 28
Thursdays, Apr. 28 through May 12, Room 105, 7-8:30 p.m. Culture is blurring the lines between different faiths. It is increasingly difficult for people to grasp how their faith in Jesus Christ is unique. People might even be tempted to ask “Why all the fuss? What here is worth devoting my life to?” This three-week, young adult study will explore what it is about Jesus that continues to fascinate and compel us. PLACE TO BELONG STUDY BEGINS NEXT THURSDAY
Place to Belong women’s group begins a new study on Thursday, Apr. 28, 7 p.m., in the Parlor. The group is for single women and other women who may be worshipping alone. “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” is a 10-week study by the award-winning author, Philip Yancey. Each session is enhanced with a 12-minute DVD segment. The book and study guide may be purchased by contacting Bette Smith, or you may buy online or through area stores. Chapters 1-3 and Session One questions should be completed for the first class meeting. Please join us!

POLY CENTER CLOTHES NEEDS
Keep those spring and summer clothes coming for the Poly Center. We hand out more than 600 articles of clothing to at least 36 families each of the three days we are open. Now that we have room upstairs, we can store those gently worn winter clothes when you clean out your closets for spring. Also, we now have space for bedding, towels, light curtains, and some dishes. If you are curious about working with us, sign up to work at least one day this summer on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Contact Madelyn Dean or Joanne Bittiker for details.

Easter Sunday: many guests expected

This coming Sunday is joyous Easter, and we anticipate a large gathering in our Sanctuary to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.

On this special day of the year, think about joining us at the 8:45 a.m. worship service to free more space for guests at our 11:00 and 11:11 worship services.  
 
If you are physically able, please consider parking in the outer parking lots to allow more places for our guests. We have ample additional parking at the back of the campus using the parking lot at the building just behind the church on International Plaza. 
 
Finally, if you can, consider sitting in the balcony to allow our guests more space on the floor section of the sanctuary. Having the members of Arborlawn willingly choose the worst seats in the house makes the best statement about who we are and our desire to reach out and welcome others into God’s house.

Kindergarten class observes Palm Sunday

The kindergarten hosted the 4 year old class on Sunday, and hopefully the guests felt very welcome. After Ms. Laurie read the lesson of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, we all made coats (made from paper grocery bags) to put down on the streets of Jerusalem when Jesus rode in for Passover. Everyone then went into hall where we laid down our coats on the marked streets. Kristina led the way walking on the coat-covered street, followed by David, Meredith, Grant, and Shelby. The visiting class followed closely while Griffin led the group shouting (quietly) hosanna to actors playing Jesus as they walked by.
 
We concluded Sunday school playing the board game “Walking the Streets of Jerusalem,” which ended with the boys coming from behind to reach the temple at the same time as the girls. Special thanks to Ms. Sarah for helping everyone make their coats.
 
David had his last Sunday with us, and he will be missed. Mr. Roy has enjoyed having David and his willingness to participate. We pray for David in his new setting.
